Veerattanaeswarar Temple

This temple is the 39th Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalam of Thevaram and the 7th Sthalam of Nadu Naadu, located on the banks of the river Kedilam. It is one of the eight "Atta Veeratta Sthalams" (Eight Temples) where Lord Shiva is believed to have slain demons. This temple is also significant as the birthplace of Thirunavukkarasu Swamikal, one of the 63 Nayanmars.

The temple is open from 6.00 a.m. to 12.00 a.m. and from 5.00 p.m. to 8.00 p.m.

The Thiruvathigai Veeratteswarar Temple, located on the banks of the Kedilam River, is one of the eight Atta Veeratta Sthalams where Lord Shiva defeated demons. It is the 39th Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalam and the 7th in Nadu Naadu.


Do's and Don'ts

  1. Pray to your Ishta Devata (personal deity) before embarking on your pilgrimage.
  2. Contact the Temple Devasthanam Information Centre for enquiries, temple details, and Pooja arrangements.
  3. Reserve your travel and accommodation well in advance.
  4. Take a bath and wear clean clothes before entering the temple.
  5. Focus your attention on the God and Goddess inside the temple.
  6. Maintain silence and recite your Ishta Mantra (e.g., Om Namah Shivaya) quietly.
  7. Follow the temple’s ancient customs and traditions.
  8. Respect the religious sentiments and practices of the temple.
  9. Place your offerings only in the designated hundi (donation box).


  1. Do not visit the temple for any purpose other than worship.
  2. Smoking is prohibited inside the temple.
  3. Alcohol consumption is not allowed in the temple premises.
  4. Non-vegetarian food is strictly forbidden within the temple.
  5. Avoid approaching mediators for quick Darshan, as it may inconvenience others.
  6. Weapons of any kind are not allowed inside the temple.
  7. Do not wear head coverings like helmets, caps, turbans, or hats inside the temple.
  8. Refrain from performing Sastanga Pranama (full-body prostration) inside the Sanctum Sanctorum.
  9. Limit the time spent during Sparsa Darshan (touching the deity) in the Garbhagriha (sanctum).
  10. Do not purchase prasadams from unauthorized street vendors.
  11. Do not encourage beggars within the temple.
  12. Avoid spitting or creating any disturbance in the temple premises.


Dress Code

  1. For Men: Shirt and trousers, dhoti, or pyjamas with an upper cloth are permitted.
  2. For Women: Saree, half-saree with blouse, or chudidhar with pyjama and upper cloth are acceptable.
  3. For Foreigners: The same dress code applies as for Indian visitors.
  4. Prohibited Attire: Shorts, mini-skirts, sleeveless tops, low-waist jeans, short T-shirts, and middies are not allowed.

  3. By Road: Distance: ~12 km Route: Thiruvathigai is around 12 km from Villupuram Bus stand. You can hire a taxi or auto-rickshaw to reach the temple.
