Veeraraghava Swamy Perumal Temple

Sri Veeraraghava Swamy Perumal Temple is one among the 108 divya desams of vaishnavas and a part of tondai naadu divyadesams. The sthala is also the 21st Thiruthalam in Thondai Nadu, and is praised in verses by two of the twelve Alvars - Thirumangai Alvar and Thirumzhisai Alvar which are referred to as Divya Prabandham.Veerraghava Perumal is believed to have appeared to marry his consort Lakshmi in the place. Swamy Sri Desikan has also praised the deity in his Kingruhesa Stuthi.It is located in Panagal Street, Thiruvallur. The presiding deity Veera raghava perumal is five feet tall in a reclining position and the reclining form is 15 feet long in the temple. The Supreme Lord wears only checked clothes as Salihotra Maharishi had originally offered this to him as a bark garment. The almighty here is blessing as Veeraragava Swamy, Vaidhya Veera Ragavan and Evvul Kidanthan facing East in his Sleeping Posture Reclining on Adhiseshan with his one hand stretched out towards Brahma who has emerged from his Nabhi ( Umbilicus) as he is explaining Pranava Mantra to him. The lord’s right hand is positioned on Salihothra Munivar’s head while the left hand is in the Gyana Mudra position indicating the teaching of the four Vedas to Lord Brahma.

  1. Historical evidence suggests the Pallavas, a South Indian dynasty, built the temple sometime in the late 8th century CE.
  2. The temple is said to be at least 2000 years old.
  3. There are many inscriptions dating back to the later half of the 9th century Pallava dynasty reign here.
  4. Many of the local people believe that this Temple is around 5000 years old.This Temple follows Vadakalai style of Vaishnavite tradition.
  5. The temple also has contributions from the Thanjavur Nayaks, who ruled much later and the temple has three inscriptions dating from the Chola period.
  6. Most scholars believe that the major structures of the temple were built by Vijayanagara kings during the 14th century. 
  7. In the colonial era, the temple underwent restoration and conservation efforts under the supervision of British authorities, ensuring its preservation for future generations.
  8. Earlier this temple was administered by different dynasties like Pallava, Vijayanagara, Naicks etc.
  9. Later the management came to Sri Ahobila Math, an ancient religious institution of 600 years standing with a hoary past.
  10. The Peetathipathy of Sri Ahobila Math is called Sri Azhagiyasingar, adopting the name of the Lord Narasimha, the presiding deity of the Math.
  11. Sri Azhagiyasingars are the Hereditary Trustees of Sri Veeraraghava Swamy Devasthanam. The present 46th Jeer, Sri Ranganatha Yatindra Mahadesikan, is holding this post.
  12. The Hereditary Trustee manages the affairs of the Devasthanam in an exemplary manner. Under his guidance only the Major renovation of the Temple was taken up early in 2014 and the consecration was held in fitting manner in June 2015.
  13. The temple is open for daily worship services with designated timings for (darshan - holy viewing) and various sevas (rituals).
  14. The temple is peaceful and well-maintained, welcoming devotees for worship and prayers.
  15. Ongoing projects focus on preserving heritage, enhancing facilities, and serving the community.
  16. The temple is undergoing renovations to preserve its structure
  17. The temple is managed by the hereditary trustee, Sri Ranganatha Yatindra Mahadesikan of Sri Ahobila Math.

Do's and Don'ts

  1. Do pray your Ishta Devata before pilgrimage to the Temple.
  2. Incase of any information needed contact Temple Devasthanam information centre for enquiry, temple information and for Pooja details etc.
  3. Take a bath and wear clean clothes before you enter the temple.
  4. You need to concentrate on God and Goddess inside the temple.
  5. Everyone should maintain silence and recite your Ishta Mantra to yourself inside the temple.
  6. Need to observe ancient customs and traditions while in Temple.
  7. Everyone needs to respect religious sentiments at the Temple.


  1. Smoking is restricted in temple premises.
  2. Do not consume alcoholic drinks at Temple.
  3. Don’t eat non-vegetarian food in the Kshetram.
  4. Do not approach mediators for quick Darshanam. It may cause inconvenient to others.
  5. Do not make temple premises dirty.
  6. Head guards like helmets, caps, turbans and hats are restricted inside the temple premises.
  7. Do not perform Sastanga Pranama inside the Sanctum Sanctorum.
  8. Do not take much time while performing Sparsa Darshanam to God in Garbhagriha.
  9. Do not buy spurious prasadams from street vendors.
  10. Don’t encourage beggars at Temple.
  11. Maintain discipline and do not spit or create nuisance in the premises of the temple.

How to reach

BY TRAIN:

You can take a suburban train from Chennai Central to Thiruvallur station. From the Thiruvallur station, you can take an auto rickshaw or taxi to the temple. The Temple is located 3.7km from the Thiruvallur railway station.


BY BUS:

  1. Several buses ply between Chennai and Thiruvallur. You can take any bus that goes to Thiruvallur bus stand
  2.  Some buses that go to Thiruvallur include 505, 572, 596, 597, 153A, 583A, 597A, 505K, and 153T. 
  3. And from there, take an auto rickshaw or taxi to the temple.
  4. The temple is at 500 metres distance from the Thiruvallur bus stand.


BY AIR:

The nearest airport is Chennai International Airport (MAA), which is located approximately 43 kilometres away from the temple if you reach the airport then in 1 hr 18 mins you reach the temple by train or bus.
