Origin/History :-

The Veera Narasimha Perumal Temple originally dates back to the 7th to 8th century. During the Maratha period, the temple was reconstructed, and a mukha mandapam (entrance hall) was added. The pillars of the temple bear Marathi inscriptions that document the significant contributions made by the Maratha King Saraboji to the temple's development.

Puranic Significance :-

According to legend, Sri Veera Narasimha Perumal took the form of a Yazhi (a mythical creature) to slay the demon Thanjaka, who had transformed into an elephant. As a result, this place was originally known as Thanjai Yazhi Nagar or Thanjamapuri, which later evolved into Thanjavur. It is also believed that the sage Markandeya worshipped Sri Narasimha at this temple.
