Origin/History :-

The temple is believed to have existed before the 6th to 7th century, though specific details of its origin are not fully documented. Its foundation likely predates this period, with early structures possibly built in wood or other materials, which were later replaced with stone during the Chozha period. This indicates that the temple underwent significant renovations, reflecting the prominence of the site during the Chozha dynasty's rule.

The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, who is worshipped here as Sri Neelakandeswarar. This name is deeply connected to Thiruneelakanda Yazhpanar, one of the 63 Nayanmars. Thiruneelakanda Yazhpanar, an important saint from this region, is believed to have been born here, and his association with the temple likely influenced the naming of the deity.

In 1996, the temple underwent a Maha Kumbhabhishekam, a grand consecration ceremony that re-established its spiritual significance and revitalized its religious practices. This event marked a major milestone in the temple's history, further cementing its importance as a place of worship and pilgrimage.
