This temple is revered as a Divya Desam, one of the 108 sacred abodes of Vishnu glorified by the Azhwar saints in their hymns. Vishnu is worshipped here as Vaithamanidhi Perumal, and his divine consort is Goddess Kumudavalli. The temple is also known as Kuberasthalam, where Kubera, the god of wealth, is believed to have received the blessings of the Lord. Kubera, the god of wealth, once lost all his wealth due to a curse from Mother Parvathi. The Nava Nidhis, representing nine kinds of wealth, deserted him and sought refuge with Lord Narayana—Perumal. As the protector of these Nidhis, Lord Narayana was worshipped and came to be known as Vaithamanidhi Perumal. He grants darshan to devotees while keeping these Nidhis under His right shoulder. According to scriptures, Kubera worshipped Vaithamanidhi Perumal and regained his lost wealth. The Lord is also referred to as Adharmapisunam.
