Srivaikuntanathan Perumal Temple (also called Srivaikuntam temple and Kallapiran temple) in Srivaikuntam, a town in Thoothukudi district in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu, is dedicated to the Hindu god Vishnu. It is located 22 km from Tirunelveli.Srivaikuntam Sri Vaikuntanathan Perumal Temple, also known as ‘Srivaikuntam Temple’ is one of the ‘108 Divya Desam Temples’ dedicated to Lord Vishnu and also one of the ‘Nava Tirupathi Temples’ situated in Srivaikuntam for about 30 km from Tirunelveli city of Tamilnadu, and it is also called as ‘Kailasapuram’.

  4. The 9 temples of Nava Tirupathi are Thiruvaikundam, Thiruvaragunamangai, Thirupulinkudi, North & South temples of Thirutholaivillimangalam, Thirukkulanthai, Thiruperai, Thirukolur and Thirugurukoor. 
  5. Srivaikuntam Temple is associated with Rama Avathara and the planet Suryan.


PURANIC SIGNIFICANCE 1:


  1. This sthala perumal, Sri Vaikundanathan is found alone in Nidra Kolam, as Aadhiseshan serving him as an umbrella.
  2. Once, a thief named, Kaala dooshakan, after stealing the precious things from the people had an agreement in his mind, that he will give half of the stolen things to this sthala perumal.  
  3. Whenever he steals something, he dedicates half of the stolen things to Vaikunda nathan.
  4. Likewise, once he stole some precious ornaments and things from the King's palace. 
  5. But unfortunately, he was caught up by the palace authorities. 
  6. They brought him to the palace and made him stand in front of the king. 
  7. Without knowing what to do, he meditated on Sri Vaikuntanathan, in his mind and heart. 
  8. Since Perumal got the things from the thief, he occupied entirely in the heart the minds of him.
  9. After this, he explained the Aathma Gnana to the king. 
  10. The voice and the appearance belongs to the thief, Kaaladooshan, but the explanation of the Gnana was told by Sri Vaikundanathan. 
  11. After hearing this, the Emperumaan gave his darshan to both the king and the thief in Nindra Thirukkolam.
  12. As asked by the king, this perumal is named as “Kalla Piraan”. 
  13. Kalla – means thief. Since, he gave the seva through a thief, he is named as Kalla Piraan.
  14. Once, Somagan, who was a demon steeled the vedas from Brahma devan and he seeked the help of Sriman Narayanan. 
  15. Sri Vaikundanathan fought with the Arakkan (demon) to get back the vedas. This is one of the sad stories about this sthala perumal.
  16. Born as an ordinary human in Ayodhya, Brighu Chakravarthy in the next generation as the biggest emperor, he was given the pratyaksham of this sthala Emperumaan. Devendran, Indiran was also given the pratyaksham.
  17. The utsavar – Kallabiraan with the Gadha, a weapon in his hand and along with the Sangu and Chakram along with Periya piratti and Bhoomi piratti along the two sides, he giving his seva as “Abayakara Varadhan” in Nindra Kolam.
  18. The Sculpturist, after finishing doing the utsavar – Kallabiraan, was excited and forgot about the beauty of the perumal. 
  19. As an excitement, he pinched (Expressed as the happiness and the admiration of the beauty of the Kallapiraan perumal. 
  20. Because of this, a small impression is found on the cheeks of this utsava perumal.
  21. That kind of beauty, this kallapiraan perumal is Moolavar, after fighting with the Somagasuran for the vedas of Brahma devan, in a hurry, he climbed up on Garudan leaving two pirattiyaar. 
  22. Because of this only, the Moolavar is found alone in this sthalam in Nindra Kolam.
  23. This sthala perumal is also named as “Paal Pandiyan”. 
  24. The story behind is one of things that has to be explained.
  25. Brahma devan did the tapas on the perumal and the perumal suddenly disappeared into the earth. 
  26. But the cows, which roamed along the place, automatically gave the milk, where the perumal disappeared. 
  27. After digging the place, Brahma devan took the perumal out of the place and after he raised this temple. 
  28. Since, he was able to get out the perumal, because of the cow’s milk, this perumal is also named as “Paal Pandiyan”.
  29.  “Paal means – milk”.
  30. It is said that Sooriya perumal, worship this perumal twice a year. 
  31. As that of it, 6 days of chithirai and 6 days of Aippasi month, the rays of the sun cross the Gopura entrance and are found all along the Emperumaan as explaining that he is worshipped.
  32. Two thaayars, Vaikunda valli and Sora Valli are found in separate sannadhis. Vaikunda valli is periya pirattiyaar and Sora valli is found after the Soranatha Naachiyaar’s vaasal. 
  33. The vaikunta vasal is opened only during Vaikunda Ekadasi.
  34. Near the Vaikunta Vasal, manavaala maamunigal sannadhi and Dasavatharam of Sri Vishnu is found. 
  35. Opposite to this is a separate sannadhis for Yoga Narasimhar in south east direction. 
  36. Every tuesday, special Poojas are done for Yoga Narasimhar.
  37. On the North side a separate sannadhi for Thiruvenkada Mudayaan, Sri Srinivasar in big mandapam is found.

  1. The first of the Navathirupathi thalams, this thalam belongs to Surya. 
  2. Here Swami is seen standing under Indra Vimana. 
  3. There is a punishment in hand. Above the head is the umbrella of Adisashan. 
  4. There are no mothers with Swami. 
  5. There is a shrine of Vaikundavallithayar in the prakaram. 
  6. On the full moon days of Chitrai and Aippasi months, sunlight falls on the feet of Vaikundanathar in the morning. 
  7. Correspondingly, the flag tree in front of the Swami shrine, the altar is facing south. 
  8. Those who have dosha related to the sun in their horoscope can pray here for relief.


108 blanket decoration


  1. On the first day of Tai, 108 blankets will be worn for Kallapiran. 
  2. Then, he will circle the flagpole. After that, take each blanket and spread the decoration. 
  3. It is believed that all the Perumals in the 108 divine lands, blessed by the Azhwars, appear in the form of Kallapran on this day.
  4. Acharya's beautiful description: Nammalvar in his Pasuram has performed Mangalasasana, “Lying down on the ground, standing in Vaikundam from Varakunamangai”. 
  5. “One who is hungry will lie down and wait until the cooking is finished. 
  6. When he gets hungry, he sits up in curiosity. 
  7. If the cooking is still late, he gets up impatiently.
  8. "Similarly, Perumal, who graced Nammalvar, appears first lying on Puliyangudi (Patha Kolam), then sitting on Varakunamangai, and standing in this temple until he reaches a high level of devotion," said the Vaishnava Acharya, the beautiful Manavalapuruman , who explained Nammalhvar's pasuram.

Do's and Don'ts

  1. Do reserve your travel and accommodation at Temple well in advance.
  2. Take a bath and wear clean clothes before you enter the temple.
  3. Do concentrate on God and Goddess inside the temple.
  4. Do observe ancient customs and traditions while in the Temple.
  5. Do respect religious sentiments at Temple.
  6. Do deposit your offerings in the hundi only.

  3. Do not eat non-vegetarian food in the Kshetram.
  4. Do not carry any weapon inside the temple.
  5. Do not wear any head guards like helmets, caps, turbans and hats inside the temple premises.
  6. Do not take much time while performing Sparsa Darshanam to God in Garbhagriha.
  7. Do not encourage beggars at Temple.
  8. Do not spit or create nuisance in the premises of the temple.

  1. Traditional Attire: Men should wear dhotis or veshtis, and women should wear sarees or salwar kameez.
  2. Modesty: Ensure clothing is modest, covering shoulders and knees.
  3. No Western Outfits: Avoid shorts, sleeveless tops, and other Western clothing.
  4. Footwear: Remove footwear before entering the temple premises.
