Sri Neervanna Perumal Temple

Sri Neervanna Perumal Temple in Thiruneermalai, near Chennai, is one of the 108 Divya Desams dedicated to Lord Vishnu and his avatars. It's located near Tambaram. There are two temples here: Neervanna Perumal temple at the bottom of the hill, and Sri Ranganathar temple at the top. In this place, Lord Vishnu is worshipped in four forms: standing as Neer Vanna Perumal, sitting as Narasimha, reclining as Ranganatha, and walking as Ulagalanda Perumal.

The legend is that when Valmiki prayed to Lord Ranganatha and Goddess Ranganayaki in the base temple, they took the form of Lord Rama and Sita. The Sesha, Conch, Chakra appeared as Lakshmana, Bharata and Shatrughna and Garuda as Hanuman. Sage Valmiki could view Lord Ranganatha, Lord Trivikrama and Lord Narasimha in the top temple. Long ago, this hill was surrounded by water when Thirumangai Azhwar visited the shrine. Hence it is called Thiruneermalai. It is one of the Divya desam. People need to climb steps to reach the hilltop. There are around 200 to 300 steps.


Do's and Don'ts

  1. Before going inside the temple, make sure to take a bath and wear clean clothes.
  2. While you're in the temple, always show respect for old traditions and other visitors.


  1. Remember, smoking and drinking are not allowed anywhere on the temple grounds.
  2. Avoid chewing betel leaves, tobacco, or any kind of gutka, and don't spit inside the temple premises.


Dress Code

Men should wear shirts and trousers, or traditional attire like dhoti or pyjamas with a top. Women are encouraged to wear sarees, half-sarees with blouses, or chudidhars with pyjamas and a top. However, clothing like shorts, mini-skirts, sleeveless tops, low-waist jeans, and short-length T-shirts are not permitted.

  1. By Train: The nearest railway station to Thiruneermalai is Tambaram Railway Station. From there, you can take a taxi, auto-rickshaw, or bus to reach the temple. Tambaram Railway Station is a major junction and is well-connected to various parts of Chennai and neighbouring towns.
  2. By Road: You can reach the temple by road using private vehicles, taxis, or public transportation such as buses. Thiruneermalai is well-connected by road, and there are various routes you can take depending on your starting point.
