Sri Kuralappa Perumal Temple

Thiruvazhmarban Temple, also known as Sri Kuralappa Perumal Temple in Thiruppathisaram, a village in Kanyakumari district in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu, is dedicated to the Hindu god Vishnu. Thiruvazhmarban Temple is located about 5 km far, north-easterly to Nagercoil, 20 km far, north-westerly to Kanyakumari and 45 km south-west of Nanguneri Divyadesam. It is one of the 108 Divyadesam dedicated to Vishnu, who is worshipped as Thiruvazhmarban and his consort Lakshmi as Kamalavalli.Thiruvazhmarban is believed to have appeared to the Saptarishis, the seven sages, and to Udayanangai, the mother of Nammazhwar.

PURANIC SIGNIFICANCE 1:



  1. As per Hindu legend, Saptarishis, the seven sages of Hindu Mythology are believed to have worshipped Vishnu at this place. 
  2. Vishnu was pleased by their devotion and appeared at this place.


PURANIC SIGNIFICANCE 2:


  1. As per another legend, king Kulasekara, who would go on to become Kulashekhara Alwar came to this place after a conquest. 
  2. His horse was lost and he was in search of the horse. 
  3. He found that the horse was grazing peacefully on the banks of Soma Theertham, the temple tank. 
  4. After taking a bath in the tank, he felt rejuvenated worshipping the Vishnu temple in the banks. 
  5. He is believed to have constructed the temple and named the place as Thiruvanparisaram (pari in Tamil indicates horse). 
  6. Thiru indicates respect, vazh means live and marban indicates the heart of the person. 
  7. Since Vishnu held his consort in his heart in this place, he is commonly referred to as Thiruvazhmarban. 


PURANIC SIGNIFICANCE 3:


  1. The legend says that the two couples named Udaya Nangai and Kaarimaran, got married at Thiruvanparisaram. 
  2. Since they had no children, they visited Thirukurungudi temple, where Lord Nambi is the presiding deity, and prayed to Lord Nambi for child boon. 
  3. Lord Nambi appeared before the couple and said that He Himself will be born to them and asked them to take the child to the Tamarind tree at Thirunagari.
  4. He also said that the child would bring them a great reputation. 
  5. As Lord Nambi said, Udaya Nangai gave birth to a male child on Visaka Star day, which was a poornima full moon day. 
  6. They took the child to Thirunagari as told by Lord Nambi, in a golden carrycot. 
  7. The child suddenly climbed on the tree with Gnana Mudra, the most common yogic mudra used in meditation which refers to ‘Wisdom’. 
  8. The child was believed to be in penance for 16 years.
  9. This is one of the sacred events which took place at the holy village Thiruvanparisaaram.


Birthplace of NammAzhvaar’s mother


  1. Thiruvanparisaram is the birth place of Udaya Nangai. She was married to a man from Kurugur. 
  2. Being childless, she undertook a 41 day penance here as instructed by the Thirukurungudi Lord Nambi. 
  3. As a result of this penance, NammAzhwar was born to them. However, immediately after his birth, he sat under the Tamarind tree in (Azhvaar)Tirunagari and remained speechless for several years.


Rishis directed to Parisaram


  1. Wanting the darshan of Lord Vishnu, Saptha Rishis undertook penance near Suchindram. 
  2. They were redirected to undertake further penance about 10 kms North West of Suchindram. 
  3. It is believed that Lord Vishnu provided darshan to these seven rishis at Thiruvanparisaram.


The Name- Thiruvazhmarban


  1. After the killing of Asura Hiranyan, Lord Narasimha was in an angry mood. 
  2. Lakshmi is said to have undertaken penance here to cool down the Lord. As per the request of Prahalad, Lord came here searching for Lakshmi. 
  3. Happy to find her Lord again and in a cool form as a Shantha Swaroopi, Lakshmi is said to have requested the Lord to provide her a place in his heart which the Lord readily accepted.
  4. As Lakshmi resides in the chest of the Lord at this temple, he came to be called Thiru Vazh Marban.


Presentation of Ramayana


  1. According to the request of Anjaneya, Sage Agastya is said to have presented the entire story of Ramayana at this place for the benefit of the devotees. 
  2. In memory of this event, one sees Anjaneya with folded hands addressing Sage Agastya, who is in a seated posture opposite him. 
  3. Also seen in this sannidhi are Lankan King Vibheeshana and Kulasekara Azhvaar.


NammAzhwar as a child


  1. NammAzhwar, who was born after the 41 day penance of his mother at this place, is seen as a small child at this temple, to the left of Thiruvazhmarban. 
  2. This is a special feature of this Divya Desam.

Do's and Don'ts

  1. Do contact Temple Devasthanam information centre for enquiry, temple information and for Pooja details etc.
  2. Do reserve your travel and accommodation at Temple well in advance.
  3. Take a bath and wear clean clothes before you enter the temple.
  4. Do concentrate on God and Goddess inside the temple.
  5. Do observe ancient customs and traditions while in Temple.
  6. Do respect religious sentiments at Temple.
  7. Do deposit your offerings in the hundi only.


  1. Do not come to Temple for any purpose other than worshipping God and Goddess.
  2. Do not smoke at Temple.
  3. Do not consume alcoholic drinks at Temple.
  4. Do not eat non-vegetarian food in the Kshetram.
  5. Do not carry any weapon inside the temple.
  6. Do not wear any head guards like helmets, caps, turbans and hats inside the temple premises.
  7. Do not perform Sastanga Pranama inside the Sanctum Sanctorum.
  8. Do not take much time while performing Sparsa Darshanam to God in Garbhagriha.
  9. Do not encourage beggars at Temple.
  10. Do not spit or create nuisance in the premises of the temple.


Dress Code

Below general statement as per high court order [Men should wear a “dhoti or pyjama with upper cloth or formal pants and shirts” to temples and women should wear “a saree or a half saree or chudidhar with upper cloth.” Children could wear “any fully covered dress.”]
