Sri Devaadi Raja Perumal Temple

Sri Devaadi Raja Perumal Temple, located in Mayiladuthurai, Tamil Nadu, is dedicated to Lord Vishnu as Devaadi Raja Perumal. The temple is one of the Divya Desams, praised in the Divya Prabandham by the Azhwars. Lord Vishnu is enshrined in a seated posture with his consort, Goddess Sengamalavalli Thayar. The temple is renowned for its beautiful Dravidian architecture, a towering gopuram, and intricate sculptures. It is believed that worship here grants relief from sins and blessings for prosperity. Devotees often visit during Vaikunta Ekadashi and other festivals to seek the lord's divine grace.

  1. Devaadi Raja Perumal, or Thiruvazhunthoor, is a Hindu temple situated in Thiruvazhunthoor (Therazhundur), a village in Mayiladuthurai district of Tamilnadu. Devaadi Raja Perumal temple is also called by the names Azhundoor, Azhundhai, Therazhundur. 
  2. This is one of the 108 Divya Desam and 23rd Divya Desam in Chozha nadu. 
  3. Here Moolavar Devathi Rajan is flanked by Garuda, Prahalad, Cauvery and Markandeya.


PURANIC SIGNIFICANCE:


Story of Uparisaravasu:



  1. Uparisaravasu was the king of Sethi Kingdom and was the student of Devaguru Bhragaspathi.
  2. He got a chariot which floated in the sky from Lord Indra. 
  3. Once he settled a dispute between the Rishi’s and Devas and favoured it on the Deva's side. 
  4. The Rishi’s got angry and cursed the king that his chariot would not fly in the sky. 
  5. So as an effect to the curse, his chariot got stuck in this place and the king fell in front of the lord. 
  6. Henceforth this place is called Therazhundur (Ther means Chariot).
  7. Lord Narayana sent Garudan and helped him to fly back. 
  8. As Lord helped the person loved by Deva’s who was a human he was called Devaadirajan from then on.


Story of Amaruviappan:


  1. Cow and calf belong to the Deva group, buffalo belong to the Asura group and sheep belong to Mankind. 
  2. Lord Krishna thus saves all the living things. 
  3. As Jeevathma becomes a tamed cow before Lord Krishna and he too behaves as a tamed cow in front of a pure heart, he is called as Amaruviappan (ie) Aaa means cow (person who is as soft as a cow). 
  4. Thus Lord Aamaruviappan is said to inherit the qualities of Lord Krishna (ie) (he contains Lord Krishna’s Amsam).
  5. As an act of Unison, Lord Krishna (i.e) Lord Aamaruviappan is dressed up as Lord Rama and brought in Ceremony near the Vedapureeswarar temple (Lord Shiva's temple).


Story of Sage Agastya:


  1. Sage Agastya wanted to wed Cauvery. When she refused, the sage locked her here. Cauvery escaped from this place only to be cursed by the Sage that the place where Cauvery goes would be in trouble. 
  2. Cauvery undertook penance here at Therazhundur to get liberated from the curse of Sage Agasthiya.

  5. Disrespectful behaviour: Refrain from any behaviour that might offend religious sentiments.

  1. For Men: Shirt and trousers, dhoti, or pyjamas with an upper cloth.
  2. For Women: Saree, half-saree with blouse, or churidar with pyjama and upper cloth.

  1. By Air: The nearest airport is in Trichy, which is 120 kilometres away from the shrine.
  2. By Rail: The nearest railway station is Kutralam Railway Station, which is four kilometres from the temple. Mayiladuthurai, about 6 km from the place, is also well connected by trains.
  3. By Road: Mayiladuthurai is the nearest town about 13 km away, which is well connected by buses, and one can reach Therazhundur from there by buses and other vehicles.
