Punniyakodi Appar Temple

This temple is the 275th Devaram Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalam, discovered after identifying 274 other temples located on the southern side of the Kaveri River in Chozha Nadu. It is situated on the banks of a branch of the Vennaru River. Currently, this place is known as Thiruvidai Vasal. The identification of this temple as a Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalam is based on hymns composed by Thirugnanasambandar, which are inscribed on the sanctum's walls.

Origin/History :-

This temple, praised by Thirugnanasambandar in his hymns, likely existed before the 7th century, as he lived during that time. The original structure may have been reconstructed as a stone temple during the Chozha period, possibly under Kulothunga Chozha I's reign.

Initially, only 274 temples were identified as Paadal Petra Sthalangal. In 1917, while excavating a mound, this temple was discovered, and the Thevara hymns inscribed on its wall confirmed its significance. Following this discovery, the temple was officially added as the 275th Paadal Petra Sthalam and 128th in Chozha Nadu.

Puranic Significance :-

The name "Thiruvidai Vasal" is believed to have originated from a temple built and worshipped by a king of the Surya clan named Vidyayan. The name also has significance related to Shiva's vehicle, "Vidai" (the bull Nandi), which appears on Shiva’s flag. Due to this close association with a Shiva Thalam (a sacred site of Shiva), the place came to be called Thiruvidaivasal.

This temple was constructed by the first Kulothunga Chola, but the place has been known as Thiruvidaivasal even before the time of Thirugnanasambandar. This is why Sambandar referred to the place as "Vidaivaye" in one of his hymns.
