Parvatheeswarar Temple

This temple is the 167th Thevara Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalam and the 50th Sthalam on the southern side of the Kaveri River in Chozha Nadu. Historically, it was known as Thiruthelicheri during the 6th to 7th centuries and is now locally referred to as Kaarai Kil Pathu, situated on the northern side of Karaikal, near the bus stand. According to Periyapuranam, written by Sekkizhar, the revered poet-saint Thirugnanasambandar visited this temple after worshiping Lord Shiva at Thirunallar. The text also recounts how Thirugnanasambandar crossed the region of Bhodhimangai, where a Buddhist settlement existed. In a notable event, he engaged in a debate with the Buddhists there and emerged victorious, as detailed in the legend.

Origin/History :-

The temple holds significant antiquity as it is one of the Thevara Paadal Petra Sthalams, with hymns sung by Thirugnanasambandar in praise of Lord Shiva, indicating the existence of the original temple before the 7th century CE. During the Chola period, the temple underwent reconstruction, showcasing their architectural contributions. In later years, the Nattukottai Nagarathar community completely rebuilt the temple, preserving its spiritual and architectural heritage.

Renovation efforts led to Maha Kumbhabhishekam being performed twice in recent history:

  1. On 9th May 1971
  2. On 7th June 2004
