Mayakoothar Perumal Temple

Sri Srinivasa Perumal Temple or Sri Mayakoothar Perumal Temple is one of the Nava Tirupathi, nine Hindu temples dedicated to Lord Vishnu located in Perungulam, Tiruchendur-Tirunelveli route, Tamil Nadu, India in the banks of Thamirabarani river. This temple is the 6th Thiruppathi out of Nava Tirupathi temples.

  1. Sri Srinivasa Perumal Temple or Sri Mayakoothar Perumal Temple is one of the Nava Tirupathi, nine Hindu temples dedicated to Lord Vishnu located in Perungulam, Tiruchendur-Tirunelveli route, Tamil Nadu, India in the banks of Thamirabarani river. 
  2. This temple is the 6th Thiruppathi out of Nava Tirupathi temples. 
  3. All these 9 temples are classified as "Divya Desams", the 108 temples of Vishnu revered by the 12 poet saints, or Alwars.
  4. This is one of the 108 sacred places of Lord Vishnu and the 6th Navathirupathi dedicated to Sani Bhagavan or Saturn. 
  5. This sthalam is situated 7 miles North East of Sri Vaikundam and 6 miles North of Thiruppulingudi. 
  6. Bus facilities are available, but no lodging facilities. 
  7. Garuda seen alongside Utsavar is a unique feature at this Divya DesamThis temple is also called as ‘Sri Mayakoothan Perumal Temple’, ‘Perungulam Temple’, ‘Balika Vanam’, and ‘Sani Kshetram’. 
  8. After rectification and painting the temple was consecrated on 09-12-1998.
  9. Devotees worship in these temples to relieve them from the adverse effects of the planets in their life.
  10. There are nine sacred shrines in this Pandya region equal to those in the Chola region attributed to nine planets. 
  11. As Lord Vishnu himself is acting as the nine planets in these places, there are no separate shrines for the Navagrahas, the nine planets. 
  12. Those facing any adverse aspect of a planet are advised to visit the Nava – nine Tirupathis for relief.


PURANIC SIGNIFICANCE 1:


  1. The legend has it that a Bramin couple Vedasara and his chaste wife Kumudavalli were passionate devotees of Lord Sriman Narayana.  
  2. They had no offspring for a long time. They underwent severe austerities after a holy dip in the Perungulam Pushkarani, praying to Lord Srinivas on this sacred land. Soon, they were blessed with a girl child and they named her ‘Kamalavati’.  
  3. This stunning girl was a zealous devotee of Lord Vishnu at an early age.  
  4. Her desire to attain Lord has become a yearning to get him as her husband. She followed strict austerities and worshipped Lord Srinivasa.  
  5. The most compassionate Lord answered her prayers and married her in this sacred land.  
  6. Thus, this place has got its name ‘Balika Vanam’.


PURANIC SIGNIFICANCE 2:



  1. Thayar Kamalavathi was born to Vedhasaran and Kumudhavalli, who are doing pooja to Perumal. Kamalavalli said that she will not marry any human beings. 
  2. So she started her penance on Vishnu. Perumal was pleased by Kamalavathi’s penance, appeared and kept her on his Chest.
  3. When Kumudhavalli, on her way to take bath, a demon by name Achmasaran took her and kept her in himalayas. As per the request of Vedhasaran, Perumal with the help of Garuda, took her back and Killed the demon Achamasaran. 
  4. Hence Garuda took Perumal on his back to this place and he was given a special status, seen along the Urchavars.

Do's and Don'ts

  1. Do pray your Ishta Devata before pilgrimage to the Temple.
  2. Do contact Temple Devasthanam information centre for enquiry, temple information and for Pooja details etc.
  3. Do reserve your travel and accommodation at Temple well in advance.
  4. Take a bath and wear clean clothes before you enter the temple.
  5. Do concentrate on God and Goddess inside the temple.
  6. Do respect religious sentiments at Temple.
  7. Do deposit your offerings in the hundi only.


  1. Do not smoke at Temple.
  2. Do not consume alcoholic drinks at Temple.
  3. Do not eat non-vegetarian food in the Kshetram.
  4. Do not carry any weapon inside the temple.
  5. Do not wear any head guards like helmets, caps, turbans and hats inside the temple premises.
  6. Do not perform Sastanga Pranama inside the Sanctum Sanctorum.
  7. Do not take much time while performing Sparsa Darshanam to God in Garbhagriha.
  8. Do not buy spurious prasadams from street vendors.
  9. Do not encourage beggars at Temple.
  10. Do not spit or create nuisance in the premises of the temple.


Dress Code

  1. Male devotees have been advised to wear dhoti, shirt, pyjama or pant and shirt while women and girls should wear saree or chudidhar or 'pavadai' with half-saree. 
  2. Devotees wearing lungi, bermudas, jeans and tight-leggings would not be allowed.
