Chala Bhagavathi Temple

Sri Chala Bhagavathi Temple is one of the one hundred and eight Durgalayas installed by Sri Parasurama Maharshi. A shala was built for the purpose of performing the yagam in the east of the present day Kannur, which was known as Kanvannur because it was the place where Sri Kanva Maharshi had done penance. Historically, this place became Shala and then Chala.

  1. Sri Chala Bhagavathi Temple is one of the one hundred and eight Durgalayas installed by Sri Parasurama Maharshi.
  2. A shala was built for the purpose of performing the yagam in the east of the present day Kannur, which was known as Kanvannur because it was the place where Sri Kanva Maharshi had done penance. 
  3. Historically, this place became Shala and then Chala.
  4. The temple was earlier known as Puzhavayal Bhagavathi temple. Sathya Pareshanam (acts of finding out truth) of Kolathiri kingdom was held in the temple. In ancient times,
  5. The temple was managed by Randu Thara Nambiars who were known as Achanmar. 
  6. The temple belonged to the Nambiar families of Ayiliyathu, Palliyathu, Arayathu and Kandothu.
  7. The legend says that Parasurama was once fighting a demon named Danavendra, and he needed the help of Goddess Bhagavathy to defeat him. 
  8. After the battle, Parasurama installed the idol of the goddess in Chala to express his gratitude.

  6. Follow Queue Systems: Adhere to the queue systems for darshan and avoid pushing or shoving.
  7. Respect Temple Rules: Follow the specific rules and guidelines provided by the temple authorities.


  1. Avoid Non-Vegetarian Food: Do not consume non-vegetarian food, alcohol, or any intoxicants before visiting the temple.
  2. No Photography: Refrain from taking photographs or videos inside the temple premises unless explicitly allowed.
  3. Do Not Litter: Keep the temple premises clean and dispose of any waste in designated areas.
  4. Avoid Loud Conversations: Do not engage in loud conversations or arguments within the temple premises.
  5. Respect the Sanctity: Do not touch the idols or deities unless it is part of the temple ritual.
  6. No Distractions: Avoid using mobile phones or any electronic gadgets that might disturb others.
  7. Do Not Misbehave: Avoid any form of misbehaviour or disrespectful conduct within the temple premises.


Dress Code

  1. Men: Wear a long-sleeved shirt and long pants. You can also wear a dhoti.
  2. Women: Wear a saree, salwar kameez, or long skirt and blouse. You can also wear a dupatta (head scarf).

By Air:

  1. Nearest Airport: The closest airport is Kannur International Airport (CCJ), also known as Karipur Airport, located approximately 21 km away from the temple.
  2. From the Airport: You can hire a taxi or take a bus from the airport to Chala.


By Train:

  1. Nearest Railway Station: The nearest railway station is Kannur Railway Station, located about 18 km from the temple.
  2. From the Railway Station: You can take a taxi, auto-rickshaw, or a local bus to reach the temple.


By Road:

  1. Bus Services: Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) and private buses operate regular services to Chala from major cities and towns in Kerala.
  2. Taxi/Auto-Rickshaw: Taxis and auto-rickshaws are readily available for hire from nearby towns and cities to Chala.
  3. Driving: If you are driving, you can use GPS navigation to reach Chala. The temple is well-connected by road and can be accessed via National Highway 66 (NH 66).
